Cahill Cup - Preliminary Round - Sunday
16th August 2009 - Listowel Emmets 0-06 Fossa 2-16
On
Sunday afternoon last our junior side travelled to Listowel to
take on the home side in the opening round of the Cahill Cup. A
strong side produced an excellent display to come away with a
2-16 to 0-6 victory. Fossa led 0-8 to 0-3 at the break with
Kevin Myers
in good shooting for with 0-4 in the opening half. An early
second half goal from Fintan Coffey put Fossa in further control
and this was followed by a string of wonderful scores from the
boot of Brenden Falvey. Killian Lynch also impressed adding 1-1,
the goal coming in the closing stages after some great work by
Damien McCormick and Darragh Sheehy. Our backs were also very
assured throughout with Michael McCarthy and Shane Malone
leading the lines well. Fossa could well be playing the next
round this coming week so check with mentors for confirmation of
fixture. Training continues with seniors. Team:

East Kerry League
Div 2 Final - Tuesday 16th June 2009 in Currow -
Fossa
3-10
Firies 3-09
Fossa
captured the East Kerry Junior League Division 2 title on
Tuesday night after an exciting and hard fought victory over
Neighbours Firies on a score line of Fossa 3-10 Firies 3-09.
IN 1990, Fossa defeated Currow to win the East Kerry Junior
League. Playing a star role at wing-back that day was a young
hopeful with dreams – Dan McKenna. On Tuesday evening last, the
2009 final saw neighbours Fossa and Firies do battle for the Tim
Lenihan Cup. And there to play his part was Dan. He entered the
fray as a substitute at full forward in the second half.
Slower in body than 19 years earlier, but quick of thought, Dan
used his natural guile and years of experience to set up vital
goals for Sean O'Brien and Steven Devane. And the Fossa juniors
reached their dream overcoming their neighbours Firies by a
single point – 3-10 to 39-in the East Kerry Junior final.Sean
O'Brien, Padraig Kelly and Kevin Myers had Fossa three points
clear before a Mike Daly free opened the Firies account in the
sixth minute. Firies had the misfortune of losing two players to
injury early on – midfielder Vincent Horgan and centre forward
Tim Foley – and this upset their rhythm and plans. Cormac Foley
registered a second Firies point followed by four from Fossa –
two Kevin Myers frees, a long range effort from Sean O'Brien and
a great point under pressure from wing-forward John Falvey. On
the stroke of half-time, a rare Firies attack was profitable as
Cormac Foley weaved a path through the Fossa defence and gave
Kevin Leane no chance for a good goal. Half-time Fossa 0-7
Firies 1-2.On the resumption, Firies Pat Browne registered a
point. Fossa introduced Dan McKenna and he made an immediate
impact. Mike O'Neill won the kick out at midfield, laid off to
Kevin Myers whose kick into the danger zone was fielded by
McKenna and his deft flick to the inrushing Sean O'Brien enabled
him split the defence for a goal. Fossa won the kick-out and
sent it back into the danger area where a quick thinking Kevin
Myers slid it soccer style past Brendan Quirke in the Firies
goal. Mike Daly (Firies) and John Falvey (Fossa) exchanged
points.
The threatening rain arrived in a downpour and it was Firies
that took advantage in the poor conditions as they went on a
five minute scoring spree which yielded 1-3 - Noel McCarthy
(1-1) and points from substitute Martin Driver and Con O'Mahony.
Following that period of dominance, Firies brought their score
to within a point of Fossa – 2-7 to 2-8.Kevin Myers and
substitute Shane Reidy swapped points as Fossa maintained its
slender lead. The final five minutes was typical cup fare with
end to end play as both teams sought vital scores. Firies Gerry
O'Sullivan levelled the match with a point but Fossa's Padraig
Kelly put his team's nose in front once again with a much
appreciated point. The next Fossa attack reached Dan McKenna and
his pass to the inrushing Steven Devane was as inch perfect as
Devane's shot to the net putting Fossa 3-10 to 2-9 ahead. In the
remaining minutes, the Fossa defence was under siege.
It took a vital finger tip interception from fullback Shane
Malone to prevent a goal by Con O'Mahony. The next Firies attack
saw Cormac Foley's strike for goal deflected into the corner of
Kevin Leane's net. There was less than a minute left as Fossa
held out to win by the smallest of margins.
Captain Daniel O'Sullivan accepted the cup from Board Chairman
Dermot Griffin who complimented both teams on an enthralling
contest. He thanked referee Mike Brosnan, his officials, and the
Currow club for the use of their fine facilities. This was a
difficult and emotional outing for the Fossa men as they
returned to playing after the death of their much loved Jimmy
Falvey and team mentor James Houlihan thanked the Firies club
for its understanding in refixing the game.
East Kerry League
Div 2 - Round 4 -
Fossa
2-7 Gneeveguilla 1-10
Gneeveguilla can thank their centre forward Aiden Donnelly for
earning them a share of the spoils in this East Kerry Junior
League game at Fossa on Tuesday evening as he kicked their only
second half score – a point from a free - late in the game.
Gneeveguilla led by seven points at half time but surrendered
that lead to a more determined Fossa outfit that didn’t want to
lose on home ground.
Gneeveguilla had five points on the scoreboard from Peter
Donovan, Paudie Russell, Aiden Donnelly and Matthew O’Connor
before Kevin Myers opened the Fossa account after fifteen
minutes. The Gneeveguilla team was moving swiftly and with
accurate passing and good score taking, they had the Fossa team
in big trouble. In a rare early attack, Fossa centre forward,
Padraig Kelly, blazed the ball wide with only the keeper to
beat. However, Kelly made amends with a point in the eighteenth
minute. Fossa settled and wing forward Stephen Devane waltzed
and weaved his way around and through the Gneeveguilla defence
to score his sides first goal and level matters after twenty
minutes. But a stronger fitter Gneeveguilla side reacted
positively with corner forward Peter O’Donovan registering three
points in quick succession. Then in the twenty-fifth minute,
Gneeveguilla’s Matthew O’Connor finished to the net to put six
points between the sides. Gneeveguilla was dominant in all
positions at this stage and it took a magnificent save from
Fossa net minder Kevin Leane to prevent Peter O’Donovan adding a
further goal to the Gneeveguilla tally. A Matthew O’Connor point
gave Gneeveguilla a half time lead of 1-9 to Fossa’s 1-2.
On the resumption, Fossa full forward Dan McKenna led the fight
back with a well taken point under pressure. Kevin Leane was
again called upon to defend his net this time saving from Aiden
Donnelly. Midfielder Colin Davidson, surged through the defence
and tagged another point for Fossa who were now playing with
greater purpose and accuracy. The Fossa full back line had to
withstand a number of threatening attacks from the Gneeveguilla
forward division, but bolstered by the experienced Willie
Buckley, it held firm. A purple patch by veteran Kevin Myers saw
him add a goal and two points to the Fossa tally to leave the
sides level with five minutes remaining. A determined
Gneeveguilla attack earned them a free which Aiden Donnelly
coolly converted giving his side the lead 1-10 to 2-6.
Amazingly, it was his sides only score of the second half.
Excitement was at fever pitch and in a final Fossa attack,
centre forward Padraig Kelly slotted over a point from 40 metres
and the game ended all square Fossa 2-7 Gneeveguilla 1-10. |
