U-16 Co. League Semi-final: Ardfert 3-13 Fossa 0-11 (after extra time)

The final score in this game does scant justice to a gallant Fossa effort. Forced to line out minus three regulars,Fossa battled gamely and at the end of normal time the sides were tied at 0-10 points each.Goals win games and,in extra time, Ardfert bagged three to finally kill off a brave Fossa team.Ardfert raced into an early lead thanks to points from Sills,Nolan and Godley.Brendan Falvey opened Fossa's account with a point from play and soon after Brian Walsh added another. Mid-fielder Godley then pointed for Ardfert before Eanna Coffey pointed from a placed ball for Fossa after Terence Moriarty had been fouled. Falvey then collected a cross from Tadgh O Shea and set up Brian Walsh to score Fossa's fourth point. Ardfert finished the half strongly with two points to leave them ahead by 0-6 to 0-4 at the break.

Ardfert , a physically stronger and more mature side, opened brightly on the resumption with points from Godley and Casey. Falvey then seemed set to goal for Fossa but his delicate lob dropped narrowly wide of the target. Falvey then pointed a free but a Costello point left Ardfert leading by 0-9 to 0-5.Fossa now began to play with increased determination as Falvey pointed from play and then scored a further two points from placed balls. Ardfert pointed a free to lead by 0-10 to 0-8 but yet another Falvey point from a free reduced the margin to the minimum. In the dying moments of normal time, as Fossa desperately sought the equaliser ,Falvey came to the rescue once more as he shot a marvellous equalising point from an acute angle.

In extra-time the strength and stamina of the Ardfert side came to the fore as Fossa tired. A Dowling point was followed by a decisive goal from Gearoid Sills who quickly added a point to leave Ardfert firmly in control. Two further goals and two points put the game totally beyond Fossa's reach as their only response in extra-time was a point from Brian Walsh. Eoin Rice was the outstanding performer for Fossa as Ardfert ran out deserving winners.

Defeat at the penultimate hurdle is always disappointing but overall Fossa had a good campaign winning five out of six group games and with a little bit of luck they might have snatched victory in normal time.

Well done lads-there are hopefully better things ahead.

East Kerry Div 3 Final

Fossa 1-10 Firies 2-6

Following a thrilling second half comeback by Firies, who trailed by 1-6 to 0-1 at the interval, Fossa held out for a narrow but thoroughly deserved victory.

Fossa began very brightly and Eanna Coffey opened the scoring with a point. A Brendan Falvey free increased the advantage and 2 further points from play by Micheal Sheehan and B Falvey saw Fossa lead by 4 points before E Kerrisk opened the Firies account with a point. Fossa were dominant and following an excellent move, Eanna Grealy scored a great goal, and an excellent pointed free from B Falvey, and another point from play by Terence Moriarty saw Fossa's total reach 1-6 at half time.

Firies, to their credit, did not thrown in the towel and their courage was rewarded early in the second half when, following a great run by E Kerrisk, Dara Jones punched Kerrisk's centre to the Fossa net. A Stephen Hoctor free narrowed the gap to 4 points, before a point from Tagdh O Shea restored some confidence to the Fossa boys. Brian Walsh kicked point number 8 for Fossa, but Firies responded with points from Hoctor, Kerrisk and O Mahony, to leave the score at 1-8 to 1-5 with about 10 mins left. An excellent David McCarthy point, and another from Brian Walsh appeared to wrap it up for Fossa, but a looping shot from G Dowd found its way to the Fossa net to set up a grand-stand finish. A further point from Dowd narrowed the gap to the minimum, but Fossa held onto a 1-8 to 2-6 victory.

Fossa had many heroes on the night and the fact that 8 different players contributed to the scoring, reflects the excellent team effort on the night. Captain Brendan Falvey accepted the shield amid scenes of great joy after this hard fought encounter. Credit to both sides for a well-contested and entertaining game. And thanks to referee Michael O Donoghue, who refereed the game very competently.

Fossa had to line-out minus David Osterloh due to illness and Conor O Leary through injury.

East-Kerry U-16 Semi-Final

Fossa 2-12 Listry 2-9

Fossa who, at one stage, enjoyed a 2-11 to 0-6 lead, had to battle hard to hold on for victory against a spirited challenge from neighbours Listry. Fossa started well with B.Falvey converting a 45, followed by points for B.Walsh, T.Moriarty and another B.Walsh point. Listry replied with two points before B.Falvey struck for two goals to put Fossa well in control. Further points from Falvey and T.O'Shea left the score at the interval-Fossa 2-6 Listry 0-4.

Fossa began the second half very brightly with a succession of points T.O'Shea, B.Falvey, D.Palmer, E.Coffey and another Falvey point from a free. Lapses in concentration then saw Listry take advantage and they scored two goals to bring them right back into contention and the rest of the game was keenly contested. Fossa's final score came from a Falvey 45 and so they qualified to meet Firies in the final which was played in Crokes pitch on Monday night last. (See report below)

U-16: Fossa 2-7 Firies 2-7 (Fossa failed to quality for the final by a point)

Fossa and Firies played a draw in this game played in Fossa on Monday evening last. Fossa lined out minus Brendan Falvey (injury) and Davis Osterloh and it was Firies who opened the scoring with a point. Tadgh O Shea replied for Fossa but Firies struck for a second point, followed quickly by a goal. Firies were playing the better football but Fossa did put together an excellent move which was finished to the net by Eanna Grealey and T O Shea scored a good point to leave the sides at 1-2 each at half-time. Fossa would rue some missed goal chances early in the game which, had even one of them been converted, would have given the home side the boost needed for victory.

Firies began the second half with great determination and scored 1-2 without reply. Fossa then introduced B Falvey and he marked his arrival with a point. T Moriarty added another while Firies replied with 2 points. Score now stood at 2-6 to 1-4 in favour of the visitors. Quick-thinking B Falvey placed T O Shea for a goal and another Falvey point was followed by 2 fine points from Brian Walsh which saw Fossa lead for the only time in the game by 2-7 to 2-6 as the contest entered the closing stages. Firies, to their credit, battled back and snatched a deserved equaliser. This result means that Fossa just failed to reach the play-off stage and the squad must now focus on the forthcoming County League campaign, which begins after the Junior Cert.

Panel: D Cronin, D McCarthy, P Sheehan, M O Shea; C O Leary, B Walsh(0-2), B Coffey; M Sheehan, F McCarthy; E Coffey; T Moriarty(0-1), E Grealey(1-0); E Rice, D Palmer, T O Shea(1-2), B Falvey(0-2), D Rice, S Hennigan, A Buckley, D O Keefe.

U-16: East Kerry League 14/4/08

Fossa 1-8 Kenmare 1-9

In a round 3 back game, visitors Kenmare emerged as narrow but deserving winners in a hard-fought encounter played in Fossa on Monday night last.

A poor first half performance from Fossa was the principal reason for this loss. To their credit, the second half saw a much-improved performance and with a little luck, Fossa might have escaped with a draw. Kenmare opened the scoring with a point, but a great score from play by B Falvey levelled affairs. However, with Kenmare totally dominant at mid-field, they reeled off a string of points to lead 0-6 to 0-1 before Fossa began to wake up, and 3 good points-(2 from well-struck frees)-by T Moriarty improved the outlook for the home side. Kenmare had the final point of the half to lead 0-7 to 0-4 at half time.

The second half started very well for Fossa when E Rice collected a ball inside the defence and calmly finished to the net. Kenmare rallied with 2 points but Fossa responded well with two further points from T Moriarty.

The contest was now in full flow and it was Kenmare who struck with the decisive score-a goal-just when it looked as if Fossa might be about to take control. Fossa finished strongly scoring two points from T Moriarty and B Falvey, but the final whistle came too soon for Fossa. They now have to beat neighbours Firies in the final round in order to be involved in the shake-up for League honours.

Panel: D Cronin, D McCarthy, F McCarthy, A McFarlane, B Coffey, P Sheehan, E Grealy, M Sheehan, B Walsh, E Rice (1-0), B Falvey (0-2), E Coffey. T Moriarty(0-6), D Palmer, T O Shea, C O Leary, D Osterloh, F O Shea, S Hennigan, M O Shea, D Rice, A Buckley, D Coffey.

U-16:East Kerry League, Round 4 7/4/08

Fossa 3-8 Gneevguilla 1-6

Fossa travelled to the heart of Sliabh Luachra on Monday evening last and, after a somewhat lethargic display, emerged victorious over a determined G'guilla team. Gneevguilla opened the scoring with a point before Fossa replied with a Ml Sheehan point followed by a goal from a free kick by Brendan Falvey which deceived the Gneevguilla defence. T Moriarty pointed before David Palmer struck for Fossa's second goal after a good bout of combined play. A pointed Moriarty free saw Fossa finish the first half on 2-3 while points for the home side from D Buckley and B O Leary left Gneevguilla on 0-3.

In the second half, Brian Walsh, now at midfield, pointed for Fossa before D Palmer struck for his second goal of the game. Walsh again pointed before a Buckley goal gave G'guilla a boost and with 10 mins remaining, Fossa led by 3-5 to 1-3. Both sides added 3 further points before the final whistle-Fossa's points coming from Tadgh O Shea, T Moriarty and Dara Rice.

Darren O Shea(Legion) was a competent referee.

Fossa 1-10 Glenflesk 0-5

This game played, in greasy underfoot conditions, in Glenflesk on Monday last saw Fossa earn a hard-fought but well deserved victory over the host club. Playing with the advantage of a strong wind in the opening period, Fossa had plenty of possession but were slow to press home their dominance. Gradually Fossa got a grip on the game and opening points from B.Walsh, B.Falvey and T.Moriarty settled the team down and further points from Walsh and Falvey saw Fossa lead by 0-5 to 0-3 with ten minutes remaining in the first half. Then an exellent bout of combined play saw B.Falvey strike for a vital goal while M.Sheehen and T.Moriarty added 2 points to leave Fossa ahead by 1-7 to 0-4 at the intreval.

Given the conditions, this lead did not seem sufficient, but a great second half performance, full of gutsy determination saw Fossa defend tenaciously and three points from the exellent T.Moriarty sealed a great victory for the Fossa boys. Glenflesk scored only one point in the second period although they were guilty of some erratic shooting. Daniel Cronin was outstanding in goal while Fintan McCarthy gave a man-of-the-match performance. D.McCarthy, D.Osterloh and P.Sheehan also played well in defence. B.Walsh had a very good game scoring two valuable points from midfield and his partner at midfield M.Sheehan also performed solidly. In attack T.Moriarty, B.Falvey and T.O'Shea impressed.

Fossa 2-11 Listry 1-5

Fossa opened their campaign in the east Kerry league with a well-deserved win over neighbours, Listry.

playing with the wind in the opening half, Fossa took a while to settle and it was Listry who had the opening point from Gavin Nolan.

Fossa then began to dominate and points from D Palmer and Terence Moriarty followed by a brace of points from B Falvey saw Fossa move into the lead. Terence Moriarty scored Fossa's fifth point and then the quick-thinking Brendan Falvey struck for a goal from a 20m free.

Approaching the interval, Gavin Nolan found the Fossa net after a good run from mid-field by Pat Sheehan but Fossa points from micheal Sheehan,Brian Walsh and David Palmer saw Fossa lead by 1-8 to1-1 at the interval.

In the second period Listry with the assistance of the breeze opened brightly but a Brendan Falvey point, followed by a goal from the alert corner forward Mikey O Shea finished the game as a contest and two closing points from Brendan falvey saw Fossa win convincingly on a score-line of 2-11 to 1-5.
